Guapparìa belongs to the genre of the classic Neapolitan song and it is one of the most famous “jacket songs” (usually love songs interpreted by singers always smartly dressed). "Guappo" derives from the Spanish word "guapo" (beautiful) that defines an arrogant but always well-dressed man.
The singers who performed the love songs were always elegant; this genre is associated with this figure.
The character of this song depicts the "guappo" who, for the love of his woman, Margherita, has lost the honour amongst the criminal milieu.
One evening, he meets a group of musician friends and takes them with him, to sing under the window of Margherita. Betrayed, he sings for and against his woman: he loves her and, at the same time, hates her.
